About

My paintings and drawings are primarily representational and comprise figuration, still life, landscape — en plein air and in the studio – and occasionally combinations of all such imagery.  I use a range of media and engage consciously with the materials, working both intuitively and intellectually.

I work from observation as well as memory, imagination and printed images, drawing ever more frequently on my time living and working outside of the United States.  My most recent paintings are inspired by my experiences in Brazil, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar.  I explore surface geometry, color relationships and space in my work.  Process is increasingly important to me, especially as I continue to combine types of imagery and experiment with materials.

At times I consider my composition carefully in advance of beginning my work, through drawings or color sketches, and then proceed deliberately.  On other occasions I begin quickly and work more intuitively, looking to find the image as the work evolves.  I strive always to work in a manner and with an approach authentic to me, consistently challenging myself.

I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, have lived and worked in South America, Europe and Asia, and currently live in New York.  I recently earned an M.F.A. degree from the New York Studio School, and I also hold a B.A. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame, a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and an M.B.A. from the Fundação Instituto de Administração (São Paulo, Brazil).
